Kakishibu Viewpoint

This June I took a course in using kakishibu dye on washi.  Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese dye made from fermented persimmons.  The production of the dye takes 2.5 years.  Paper is dyed by coating it with repeated layers of kakishibu, and one of the most beautiful attributes of the dyed paper is that the richness of the colour continues to develop over the next 5 years.

Paper-pieced screen made from Japanese and Thai washi, antique washi died with kakishibu, and assorted handmade papers. Custom handmade wooden frame.

Framed screen measures 21.5″ x 13″
